Jan started her career in application development, management consulting, and technology transfer in 1982, after complete a Masters degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence at Stanford. At that point, she joined Teknowledge as a knowledge engineer. During her seven years at Teknowledge, Jan made contributions to every part of Teknowledge's business. She developed custom systems in the application-development group in the roles of team leader and team member. She designed and developed documentation and training programs for products and custom applications. Jan also acted as a mentor and internal consultant available to all the custom application projects.
Jan founded Expert Support with Denny Brown in 1990. Her responsibilities at Expert Support include operations management, account management, project management, and staff development. She also provides a variety of documentation services to Expert Support's customers when she can fit it in. During her tenure at Expert Support, she has written internal sales documents for Sun Microsystems, user guides for Symbol Technology routers, and white papers for PrefixCo and Ironspeed, among many others. She has also served as a documentation suite design consultant to startup companies who need more high-level support.
Jan is one of the authors of "A Practical Guide to Knowledge Acquisition," by Scott, Clayton, and Gibson.
